Review Methodology
The criteria Barefoot Beginner uses to evaluate minimalist and barefoot-style shoes.
Our reviews aim to help you understand how a shoe performs in real life. Here is how we evaluate each pair.
Fit and sizing
We assess toe box width, midfoot volume, heel hold, and whether the shoe runs true to size. We note if sizing up or down is advisable.
Ground feel and flexibility
We measure how much the shoe lets your foot sense the terrain and how easily it bends with your foot. Lower stack heights typically mean more ground feel.
Durability
We look at outsole wear, upper materials, and stitching. We note common failure points and how many miles or months of use you can reasonably expect.
Performance
We evaluate how the shoe handles different surfaces and paces, from walking to tempo runs. We consider whether it suits beginners or experienced minimalist runners.
Value
We compare price to quality, durability, and versatility. A higher price is only worth it if the shoe delivers.
Who it's for
Every review includes a clear statement of who the shoe suits and who should avoid it. There is no perfect shoe for everyone.
Transparency
We disclose if we purchased the shoe ourselves or received a sample. We also note when we have not personally tested a model. Our affiliate relationships never affect our conclusions.
